LEGAL EDIBLE & MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS

Mushroom growing,
explained simply.

No big words without an explanation. No skipped steps. Start with one small jar and learn what the mushroom is doing at every stage.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Three rules keep this fun.

1Grow only legal edible or medicinal species.

2Ask an adult to handle pressure canners, steam, and hot glass.

3When a jar looks wrong, seal it and move it away. Never sniff mold.

YOUR FIRST DECISION

Choose one simple path

Do not buy equipment for every method at once. Pick the path that matches what you own and what you want to learn.

BEST SKILLS PRACTICE

PF Tek jars

Choose this to practice measuring, sterilizing, inoculating, and recognizing mycelium.

  • Uses small jars
  • Steam or pressure-canner method
  • Not the best production method for oysters
READY FOR A CANNER

Three-pound grain bag

Choose this after you understand clean technique and can safely use a pressure canner.

  • Requires complete sterilization
  • Makes spawn for a larger project
  • More expensive if contamination occurs

Before you begin

1. Name the species.Buy a clearly labeled legal gourmet culture.

2. Match the method.Tree-growing species usually prefer bags or blocks, not tubs.

3. Write the date.Label every jar, bag, and plate before it leaves your work area.

4. Make a discard plan.Know where a sealed contaminated container will go.
